La SMAS platform (Mass Spectrometry, Analysis and Spectroscopy) is a platform coupling mass spectrometry to tunable infrared lasers, thus allowing the structural characterization of ions within the mass spectrometer by infrared spectroscopy.

This is a particular spectroscopy (IRMPD - InfraRed Multiple Photon Dissociation) based on the induced fragmentation of a mass-selected ion by a tunable laser. the free electron laser of the Orsay Infrared Laser Center (CLIO - ICP platform) tunable in the 100-2000 cm range-1 provides information on functional groups. A OPO/OPA type laser completes the range of accessible wavelengths (2500-4000 cm-1) and allows in particular to probe the hydrogen bonds via the displacements of the NH and OH bands.

MS-like experiencesn can thus be carried out, typically combining the fragmentation of a parent ion by collisions or by spectroscopy UVPD (UV PhotoDissociation) and the structural characterization of a fragment ion by infrared spectroscopy. The FT-ICR mass spectrometer also offers high mass resolution.

Other equipment

free electron laser (LEL) CLIO : wide tunability (100-2000 cm-1) and high intensity, at a repetition rate of 25 Hz (trains of pico-pulses separated by 16 ns and delivered at 25 Hz)

Optical Parametric Oscillator/Amplifier (OPO/OPA) type laser pumped by an Nd:YAG laser at a repetition rate of 10 Hz

CO2 laser of high intensity (10 W) which makes it possible to obtain a gain in sensitivity associated with the fragmentation induced by the resonant absorption of LEL or OPO/OPA photons

266nm UV laser : fourth harmonic of an Nd:YAG laser at a repetition rate of 10 Hz (ns pulse), 21 mJ at 266 nm
